(COMMONLY CALLED “MENTAL ILLNESS)
“Mental “ illnesses are biologically-based brain disorders.
The brain is an organ of the body just like the heart or pancreas.
Brain disorders are physical illnesses (as much as heart disease or diabetes).
Brain disorders are not weaknesses of character or caused by the individual.
These illnesses include bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, and schizophrenia.
Brain disorders are treatable.
The effectiveness of treatment is as great or greater than for many other illnesses such as heart disease.
There are no grounds for stigma or discrimination for these illnesses.
Despite this, there seems to be a conspiracy of silence surrounding these illnesses resulting from stigma.
Unequal health insurance coverage for these illnesses is discrimination.
These brain disorders affect one out of five persons in society.
All people are made in the image of God and are people of worth!
The church is called to take the lead in stamping out societal stigma and discrimination and to welcome and affirm all people as children of God.
