Theological Reflection on Mark 2:2-5 – Jeanne Tyler

Who am I?

just a woman

with CP* and poor hearing.

A woman who falls down more than I

should

Who am I?

breaker of the bread

made holy and whole

our bodies ache for holiness.

Who am I?

knower of the story as well as teller

healer as well as healed

I know.

Four friends were a friend to one who was not able to walk. He was carried around on a pallet. These five were good friends. They must have been because they were together and the four sought healing for their friend they carried around. They heard about Jesus, the healer. They all went to check out Jesus as well. There were a ton of people around Jesus. He was not accessible to them. Theses four friends carried the fifth up on the roof and opened the roof and lowered their friend down to where Jesus was. Jesus said, to the friends, “Great is your faith.” And the man on the pallet was healed and walked away with her friends.

Friends are like this, you know. They want the best for us. They come to us with more life than we think possible. They confront us with the healer and accept us for who we are. Friends do opposite things at the same time. They accept us as we are and they carry us to places of healing.

These five must have been good friends, capable of trusting and long lasting relationships. All have shared in the healing as they had shared in the carrying. They shared in the joy of healing as they had shared the burden of lifting. All five shared the new life given to one.

Who am I?

Woman with a story

made whole by friendship

at times carried to new places of healing

Holy.
